Get off the beaten path and enjoy endless summer days under the midnight sun! This small group tour – led by a professional guide – introduces you to the beautiful and remote West Fjords, a region free of the hassles of crowds, pollution, and traffic. Take advantage of the guide’s local expertise and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow travellers as you discover some of Iceland’s best-kept secrets: scenic fjords offset by jagged mountains, abundant wildlife, unspoiled nature, well-preserved heritage, and an atmosphere of tranquillity.
Day 1: Welcome to Iceland
Arrive at Keflavík Airport where you are greeted by our local representative and transferred to your accommodation in central Reykjavík. After settling in, the rest of the day is yours to explore the city’s many cafes, museums, shops, and other points of interest. Spend the night in Reykjavik.
Highlights: Reykjavik.
Day 2: Journey to the West Fjords
We depart early in the morning for our scenic drive to the West Fjords with numerous stops along the way to enjoy some noteworthy attractions. We then make a stop at the picturesque village of Stykksihólmur on the Snæfellsnes peninsula for lunch before boarding the ferry. Enjoy the stunning scenery as the ferry cruises through the Breiðafjörður bay to its port at Brjánslækur on the south coast of the West Fjords. Spend the night in Vatnsfjörður area.
Highlights: Stykkishólmur, Breiðafjörður.
Day 3: Látrabjarg - Europe's Westernmost Point
Today’s highlight is a visit to the 14 kilometre-long, 444 metre-high cliff of Látrabjarg, the westernmost point of Europe. Látrabjarg has long been a popular bird watching destination as millions of sea birds -- including razorbills and puffins – inhabit this steep cliff. Spend the night in the vicinity of Vatnsfjörður.
Highlights: Látrabjarg cliff.
Day 4: Celebrating the Midnight Sun
Today is the summer solstice, or the day of maximum daylight, when the phenomenon known as the “midnight sun” illuminates the Arctic sky without setting in the evening – creating ideal conditions to explore the natural treasures of this region. This extra daylight comes in handy as we journey to the far western reaches of Iceland today to visit Tálknafjörður, a mesmerizing fjord, and Dynjandi, an impressive multi-tiered waterfall. Spend the night in the vicinity of Önundafjörður.
Day 5: Hesteyri - History & Scenery
Enjoy the natural beauty of Jökulfirðir with its impressive, steep snow-flecked mountains and quiet, secluded coves as a boat carries us to the beautiful island of Hesteyri. In the late 1940s the residents of this remote island village – which lacked roads and electricity – made the heartbreaking decision to leave, and by 1952 the village stood totally abandoned. The round-trip boat ride takes about 4 - 5 hours, and in the evening we head back to the Önundafjörður area for an overnight stay.
Highlights: Hesteyri.
Day 6: Ísafjörður - Capital of the West Fjords
Today, our drive is characterized by endless, dramatic fjords and towering mountains as we make our way to Ísafjörður, the Capital of the West Fjords. This town also happens to be the biggest settlement in the region and it boasts some of the most historic houses in Iceland, dating back to the mid-18th century. Ísafjörður is situated on a narrow spit in the Skutulsfjordur fjord -- part of the larger Isafjardardjup fjord -- surrounded by steep mountains popular for year-round activities. Despite its small population, Ísafjörður has a rather vibrant – some would even say international – atmosphere, and is known throughout Iceland for its rich heritage and deeply-rooted visual arts and music culture. Spend the night in the vicinity of Heydalur.
Highlights: Ísafjörður.
Day 7: Drangjökull - Iceland's Northernmost Glacier
We begin the day with a stimulating hike in the captivating Kaldalón (“Cold lagoon”) Valley, where we also have time to explore the majestic surroundings of the Drangajökull glacier in the south-west corner of Hornstrandir peninsula – one of the most remote places in Iceland. Spend the night in the vicinity of Heydalur.
Highlights: Drangjökull glacier.
Day 8: Return to Reykjavík
For our return drive to Reykjavík today, we follow the “Ring Road” through beautiful West Iceland with plenty of interesting stops along the way including the 4,000 year-old Grábrók Crater at the Grábrókarhraun lava field along with some exceptional waterfalls. Spend the night in Reykjavík.
Highlights: Grábrók crater.
Day 9: Departure
The time has come to bid farewell to this beautiful and peaceful island. Transportation to Keflavík Airport is provided via Flybus in time for your departure flight; we strongly recommend arranging a pick-up time at least 2.5 hours prior to your scheduled flight.
