Introduction

This package is ideal for the whole family, taking you the whole circle around Iceland and to many of its biggest attractions. Accommodation in cabins/hotel apartments in Reykjavík, Hvolsvöllur, Skaftafell National Park, Höfn, Lake Mývatn, Varmahlíð and Akureyri is included. The package includes activities aimed at the whole family, such as bathing in the Blue Lagoon, whale watching, visiting a farm animal zoo, a tractor-tour to a puffin colony and sailing among icebergs.

Itinerary

Day 1: A Day in Reykjavík
On arrival in Keflavík Airport, you will be met by your private chauffeur who will transfer you to your accommodation in Reykjavík. If you arrive early, we recommend stopping at the Blue Lagoon on your way to Reykjavík. It is ideal to take a stroll in the city centre, to the pond to watch the birds and visit the Viking wax museum at the Pearl, where you can also enjoy a great view of the city. Stay in a hotel apartment in Reykjavík.

Highlights: Blue Lagoon, the Pearl and Reykjavík.

Day 2: Geysir, Golden Waterfall and a Farm Zoo
You will start the day by receiving your rental car. You have a full day drive, taking in some of the best-known natural phenomena in Iceland including Þingvellir National Park, the waterfall Gullfoss, the great Geysir area and volcanic crater Kerið. You might want to pay a visit to Slakki family petting zoo at Laugarás and get to know the Icelandic farm animals before heading to Hvolsvöllur area, where you will stay overnight. Driving distance approx. 250km.

Highlights: Þingvellir National Park, Gullfoss, Geysir, Slakki and Kerið.

Day 3: Waterfalls and Wildlife
Drive through the beautiful south coast to Kirkjubæjarklaustur on the south coast. Sights along the way include the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, the rock formations of Dyrhólaey and Reynisdrangar on the black sand beach south of Vík. You might want to take a boat tour from the beach, past beautiful rock pillars and trough the opening of Dyrhólaey to watch the birdlife. Sometimes seals can be seen swimming around or resting on the rocks. Then, you will have the opportunity to experience a guided glacial hike or riding Icelandic horses in the area (excluded in price). Overnight in Kirkjubæjarklaustur area. Driving distance approx. 150km.

Highlights: Seljarlandsfoss, geothermal pool Seljarvallalaug, Skógarfoss, Dyrhólaey, Reynisdrangar, black sand beach of Vík, glacier Mýrdalsjökull and Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

Day 4: Skaftafell, Puffins and a Glacier Lagoon Boat Tour
Today you’ll visit the lush Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park. There are many interesting hiking trails, including a hike to the beautiful Svartifoss waterfall. Experience a unique tour from the farm Hofsnes to Cape Ingólfshöfði, crossing waters, mires and sands in a tractor-drawn hay cart (when in season). There is a unique puffin colony on Ingólfshöfði where you will explore the nature reserve’s best viewpoints by foot. After exploring the cape, head east to the glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón, where you take an amazing boat ride between the icebergs floating on the lake. Overnight in Höfn area. Driving distance approx. 200km.

Highlights: Skaftafell, Cape Ingólfshöfði and glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón.

Day 5: The Eastern Fjords
Drive through the magnificent eastern fjords to the ‘capital of east Iceland’, Egilsstaðir. Each fjord is unique, and you will find many small fishing villages with friendly people in picturesque settings; sights along the way include Mt. Búlandstindur, Petra's Mineral Collection and the monster-habitat Lagarfljót River. Near Egilsstaðir, you can see the island’s largest wooded area at Hallormsstaðaskógur, and it is ideal to end the day at the local swimming pool. Stay in a cabin/hotel apartment in the Egilsstaðir area. Driving distance approx. 240km.

Highlights: Mt. Búlandstindur, Petra's Mineral Collection, Lagarfljót, Hallormsstaðarskógur and Egilsstaðir.


Day 6: Lake Mývatn, Elves and Natural Baths

Head to the colourful pass Námaskarð, the tephra crater Hverfell, the pseudocraters at Skútustaðir and the lava maze Dimmuborgir, where you will find homes of elves and trolls. Fishing for Arctic Char in Lake Mývatn is an option, and an excellent way for the family to enjoy the lake’s tranquillity. End the day by relaxing in Mývatn Nature Baths and experience a luxurious dip in a pool of geothermal water. Stay overnight in Lake Mývatn area. Driving distance approx. 200km.

Hightlights: Námaskarð, Hverfell, Skútustaðir, Dimmuborgir, Lake Mývatn and Mývatn Nature Baths.


Day 7: Whale Watching and Jökulsárgljúfur

Start the day with a whale watching tour from ‘the whale watching capital of Europe’, Húsavík. Then, you can drive trhough the wonderful Jökulsárgljúfur - a part of Vatnajökull National Park, including the canyon Ásbyrgi, the Hljóðaklettar rock formations and the most powerful waterfall in Europe, Dettifoss. Stay in a cabin/hotel apartment in the Húsavík area in Mývatn lake area. Driving distance approx. 210km.

Highlights: Jökulsárgljúfur, Ásbyrgi, Hljóðaklettar, Dettifoss and Húsavík.


Day 8: Horse Riding and the Northwest

Drive to Akureyri, the ‘capital of the north’, and visit the waterfalls of Goðafoss on the way. Explore Akureyri before heading to Varmahlíð, where you can experience an optional riding on the Icelandic horse in the beautiful valley of Skagafjörður, self-proclaimed horse region of Iceland. Children under 8 (except those used to riding) will be led by the rein in a paddock. Stay overnight in Varmahlíð/Blönduós area. Driving distance approx. 250km.

Highlights: Akureyri, Goðafoss, Varmahlíð and Skagafjörður.


Day 9: Reykholt, Trolls and Waterfalls

Today, explore the west of Iceland. Sights include the Icelandic Settlement centre exhibition at the village of Borgarnes and and the largest hot spring in Europe, Deiltartunguhver. Continue up to the beautiful Hraunfossar waterfalls, where the clean spring water descentes from the lava-field to the river. You can visit the medieval research institution Sorrastofa at Reykholt, where Snorri Sturluson wrote the Saga Heimskringla in the 13th century. Then, it is ideal to get aquanted with the the troll women Drifa at Fossatún overlooking a waterfall. Head back to the capital and spend the night in the city centre. Overnight in Reykjavík. Driving distance approx. 240km.

Hightlights: Reykholt, Deildartunguhver, Hraunfossar and Borgarnes.


Day 10: Departure

Transportation to Keflavík airport with Fly-bus. If your flight is in the afternoon, you can stop in the Blue Lagoon (optional for an extra charge).

We have three categories for accommodation on this tour: Budget, Comfort and Quality.

Budget

Rooms without private facilities. These are in country hotels, farmhouses and guesthouses. Some of these have washbasins in the rooms and all provide breakfast (included in the price). In the more remote areas, most places of accommodation offer optional evening meals.


Comfort

Rooms with private shower or bath and WC. These are in hotels or well-appointed guesthouses. All provide breakfast (included in the price) and most have their own restaurant.


Quality

Rooms with private shower or bath and WC. These are in the best hotels available at each location. All hotels provide breakfast (included in the price) and have their own restaurant.
