Day 1 - Friday: Arrival & Hunt for the Northern Lights

On arrival at Keflavík Airport, you’ll be met by a driver and transferred to your comfortable accommodation in the heart of Reykjavik. Use the rest of the day to relax or take a walk around the old city centre, where you‘ll find a great variety of cafes, shops, museums and other landmarks, including the charming Christmas market in the Ingólfstorg square.

Later in the evening, after enjoying dinner at one of Reykjavik’s lively restaurants, bundle up in your warmest clothes for a guided northern lights bus tour to a good aurora-spotting location in the countryside. If you’re lucky, the skies might dance for your arrival to Iceland! *

Spend the next three nights in central Reykjavik.

* Please note that the northern lights are a natural phenomenon, so sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Day 2 - Saturday: City Tour & Christmas Village

Begin the day with a guided tour of the greater Reykjavík area, with visits to such highlights as the Icelandic presidential residence at Bessastaðir, Perlan (“The Pearl”), Hallgrímskirkja Church and the neighbouring town of Hafnarfjörður, where “hidden people” and humans live together in harmony. After the tour we recommend visiting one of Reykjavik´s fine cafes for lunch, such as Borg Restaurant in the Austurvöllur square of the old city centre.

This afternoon, you can visit the Christmas Village in Hafnarfjörður, about 20 minutes by bus from downtown Reykjavik. There, you can browse Christmas handicrafts, meet the 13 mischievous Icelandic “Yule Lads” and enjoy delicious treats, live music and other performances. From mid-December, the Yule lads will also be at the National Museum in Reykjavik at 11 AM daily. For holiday shopping, we recommend the Kringlan or Smáralind shopping malls—both are on major bus lines in Reykjavik. Otherwise, use this afternoon to enjoy the city’s thermal pools or one of the guided excursions available from the city centre.

Highlights:

  • Reykjavík
  • Bessastaðir
  • Perlan
  • Hallgrímskirkja
  • Hafnarfjörður

Optional:

  • Horse riding
  • Whale watching
  • Lava cave tour
  • ATV/quad-biking tour
  • Spa treatments
  • Christmas dinner buffets

Day 3 - Sunday: History, Hot Springs & Waterfalls

Visit some of Iceland’s most famous sights today on a guided bus tour of the classic “Golden Circle” route, starting with the fascinating Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can walk on a path in the rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Next is the majestic Gullfoss waterfall followed by the Haukadalur geothermal area, home of Geysir—the original “geyser”—and the more active Strokkur, which spouts water every few minutes.

On the way back to Reykjavik there will also be a stop at the church in Skálholt, the ancient seat of the Icelandic bishops. To end this day in the Christmas spirit, why not enjoy a delicious dinner buffet in Reykjavik with authentic Icelandic yuletide foods (best to RSVP in advance).

Highlights:

Optional:

  • Northern lights super-jeep tour
  • Snowmobiling
  • Christmas dinner buffets

Day 4 - Monday: Blue Lagoon & Departure

The last stop of your Icelandic yuletide break is at the famous Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa renowned for its bright blue, mineral-rich waters and unusual lava surroundings. Soaking in the lagoon with a silica mud face mask is a memorable ending to your stay in Iceland and a fantastic way to relax before your flight. You can also enjoy the saunas, mini-waterfall and café and gift shop inside the facilities. Afterwards, you will travel by bus onwards to Keflavik Airport for your journey home.

Note: If your flight is in the morning, we will change your travel itinerary accordingly. In-water massages are also available at the Blue Lagoon, though we do recommend booking those in advance.
