Introduction

Enjoy the stunning and diverse landscapes of south Iceland, including Þingvellir National Park, the great Geysir area, Skaftafell National Park, Seljalandsfoss waterfall, Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon and much more. This tour is suitable and recommended for families with children and is ideal for winter travels. You have the option of staying in cottages, driving distances per day are moderate and child-friendly activities can be found all along the way.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival/Reykjavík
Upon arrival, you will be met by your private chauffeur, who will transfer you from Keflavík Airport to your hotel in Reykjavík. Check into your hotel and relax after the journey. The rest of the day is open to explore Reykjavik, visit museums, landmarks and such, and ideal to unwind at one of the cozy thermal baths & spas. Overnight in a hotel or guesthouse in Reykjavík.

Day 2: Gullfoss and Geysir

Take in some of the best known attractions in the south of Iceland. Visit the unique Þingvellir National Park; listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List and a site of immense beauty and history. Head to the great Geysir area and explore the bubbling mud pots, geysers before arriving at the stunning two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall. Then you can visit the old bishopry at Skálholt and the explosion crater Kerið, now partially filled with water. Stay overnight in a hotel, guesthouse or cottage in the Selfoss/Hekla area. Driving distance approx. 220 km / 137 mi.  

Highlights: Þingvellir National Park, Geysir, Gullfoss, Skálholt, Kerið and Mt. Hekla.
Optional activities: Snorkling/diving in Silfra and Quad Biking.


Day 3: The South Coast
Visit the mysterious Seljalandsfoss, experience walking right behind the flowing water and feel the light drizzle. Continue to the 60 metre free-falling Skógafoss waterfalls in Skógar, where you will find  many interesting artifacts on display at the folk museum. At Mýrdalsjökull, you will have the opportunity to experience a guided glacial hike (optional) in the area. Stay in a hotel, guesthouse or cottage in the Kirkjubæjarklaustur/Skaftafell area. Driving distance approx. 200 km / 124 mi.   

Highlights: Saga Centre in Hvolsvöllur, Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, glacier Mýrdalsjökull.
Optional activities: A guided glacial hike.


Day 4: Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Explore Skaftafell, a part of Vatnajökull National Park and a place of great beauty with many interesting hiking trails, including a short one to the beautiful Svartifoss waterfall to most´s capacity. There you can also go glacier-walking or try your skills on ice-climbing. Head to the amazing Glacial Lagoon Jökulsárlón where in summer you are taken on can take a boat ride among the floating icebergs. Visit the fishing village of Höfn and its Glacial Exhibition, where you can learn about the dynamic forces of ice and fire shaping the Icelandic nature. Stay in a hotel, guesthouse or cottage in Höfn area. Driving distance approx. 200 km / 124 mi.  

Highlights: Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park, Vatnajökull Glacier, Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Þórbergssetur and Höfn.
Optional activities: Glacier-walk and Ice-climbing and kayaking (all year). Bird-watching tour with hey-cart to cape Ingólfshöfði (summer only).


Day 5: Black Volcanic Beach

Drive along the south coast to Vík. Worthwhile stops along the way include the Farm Zoo in Holmur, Canyon Fjaðrarárgljúfur and Dverghamrar Elve´s Cliffs. Experience the stunning black volcanic sand beach south of Vík, Reynisdrangar and last but not least the rock formations of Dyrhólaey. Stay in Vík area. Driving distance approx. 270 km / 168 mi.  

Highlights: Hólmur, Fjaðrárgljúfur, Dverghamrar, Dyrhólaey, Vík and Reynisdrangar.
Optional activities: quad biking on a lava beach and horse-riding.


Day 6: Back to Reykjavík
Continue your journey to the volcanic wonderland of Reykjanes Peninsula. Visit the Blue Lagoon geothermal seawater spa, set in a magical black lava field. It is rich in silica and blue-green algae, which gives the lagoon its reputed healing powers. Relaxing in-water massages are available but you can also unwind in the saunas and steam baths or get a natural massage under the Blue Lagoon waterfall. Head back to Reykjavik where you can do some last-minute shopping. Stay in the heart of Reykjavik. Drive along the south coast back to Reykjavík. Worthwhile stops along the way include the surroundings of the village Hveragerði. Driving distance approx. 260km / 162 mi.

Highlights: Stokkseyri, Eyrarbakki, Lake Kleifarvatn, Seltún (Krýsuvík) and the Blue Lagoon.
Optional activities: Blue Lagoon, kayaking at Stokkseyri and visit to museum of elves, trolls and northern lights (summer only). Quad biking and snorkeling on Reykjanes Peninsula are available all year.


Day 7: Departure

Transfer to Keflavik airport with FlyBus.

Accommodation Details

We have three categories for accommodation on this tour: Budget, Comfort and Quality.

Budget

Rooms without private facilities. These are in country hotels, farmhouses and guesthouses. Some of these have washbasins in the rooms and all provide breakfast (included in the price). In the more remote areas, most places of accommodation offer optional evening meals.


Comfort

Rooms with private shower or bath and WC. These are in hotels or well-appointed guesthouses. All provide breakfast (included in the price) and most have their own restaurant.


Quality

Rooms with private shower or bath and WC. These are in the best hotels available at each location. All hotels provide breakfast (included in the price) and have their own restaurant.

Advanced booking of at least three weeks prior to departure is recommended. Please note: family-cottages and hotel accommodation easily get fully booked during the high-season, thus please book well ahead of time to secure the best accommodation available.

It is possible to stay the night in the Blue Lagoon area on day 6 if you prefer and drop-off the car at Keflavik Intn Airport the following day at an extra cost.
12 years age limit on snorkeling in Silfra. Please note that Scuba dive certification (PADI Open water or equivalent) is required for diving in Silfra.


For added safety and comfort we recommend our customers to take 4x4 vehicles during the winter months.
