Introduction
Looking for an out-of-this-world experience? Want to get off the beaten track and explore the hidden gems of Iceland? Want to drive a Land Rover Defender modified with 37” tires? This winter safari will take us to the Snæfellsnes peninsula to explore the natural wonders there, and will allow us to drive ourselves, with the assistance of a local expert, through key areas of Iceland.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in the Land of Ice and Fire
Upon arrival at the airport we will be met by a private chauffeur who will transport us to the capital of the North Reykjavík. If we arrive early, we can use the time to explore the capital or stop at the renowned Blue Lagoon (Optional).
Day 2: The Vibrant West of Iceland
Today the exploration really begins: we will drive a Land Rover Defender modified with 37” tires and equipped with VHF radio intercommunication. Every day we will include different winter driving skill practices. All our trips will be led by an experienced Icelandic guide in a specially equipped support car. We head under the sea and drive under the Whale fjord before we reach the Settlement centre in Borgarnes where we will stop to digest a little history and some lunch. Heading to the mystical Snæfellsnes—where Jules Verne found the entrance to the centre of the earth—we will reach the remote location where we will stay for the next two nights. But there is limited time for kicking-back as we go hunting for the northern lights.
Day 3: The Ice, the Fish and the Lava
The beauty of nature at Snæfellsnes is never-ending and is always striking and surprising. We start the day with a drive on the Golden beach, and some river crossing action, before we reach our destination. Then it is time for lunch; where better to enjoy a tempting picnic with stunning scenery than in the Borgarhellir lava cave? After lunch, we grab our gloves and visit Lake Hlíðavatn for some ice fishing. We then head to Bjarnarhöfn to visit the only shark museum in Iceland, before ending the exhilarating day back home with a cooking demonstration – How to prepare fresh Icelandic trout.

Day 4: The Blue Ice and the Golden Beach
Today we take the Land Rovers to a higher level and climb the Snæfellsnesjökull Glacier, driving on its magical summit. The view from the peak of Snæfellsnes, down the glacier to the beaches surrounding it and on to the sea, is breathtaking. Then there is an option to take a snowmobile ride on the glacier that supposedly has mystical powers. From the glacier, we head down to the Golden beach for the drive to a horse farm where we will enjoy a show featuring Icelandic horses. The day will end with our return to Reykjavík.
Day 5: Departing the land of ice and fire
It is time to return home from this winter adventure, the flybus will pick you up at your hotel; we recommend departing at least 2.5 hours before your flight.
Extra day (alternate day 5)
The Golden Circle
This winter adventure may be coming to a close, but we still have a fun-packed day ahead. We start with a drive over a rugged mountain pass to Thingvellir national park. Thingvellir is filled with history and nature, the rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates is clearly visible and is magnificent to view. From there, we pass through farmland until we reach The Great Geysir. The geyser erupts rather irregularly these days, but its next-door neighbor “Strokkur” erupts about every 10 minutes and its huge white column of boiling water can reach heights of 20–30 meters. It is fitting to end the day with a visit to the Gullfoss waterfall—the power and might as it cascades over the cliffs will echo the power of nature that we have experienced during our trip. Our next destination will be Reykjavik.
