  • Day 1: Welcome to Iceland

On arrival to Keflavik Airport, you will be greeted by a driver who will take you to your accommodation in Reykjavík. After settling in, the rest of the day is free for you to explore the vibrant city centre at your leisure. Downtown Reykjavik offers a variety of shops, cafes and museums for all tastes and ages, most of which are within easy walking distance of each other.

Spend the next six nights in Reykjavik.

    Highlights
  • Day 2: City Highlights & Whale Watching

Start the day with a whale watching tour from Reykjavik’s old harbour. As you sail through the beautiful Faxaflói bay, you may be able to see Minke, Humpback, Fin and Blue Whales in their natural habitat. After the tour, we recommend lunch at one of the city centre’s kid-friendly cafés, such as the Laundromat Café. Then make the short walk over to Harpa, the city’s grand concert hall, where you can explore the building’s cutting edge interior and the pier next to it (guided tours available). The rest of the day is at leisure.

    Highlights
  • Day 3: The Golden Circle & Farm Animals

Collect your rental car in the morning and head into the countryside, beginning with visits to some of the best-known natural phenomena in Iceland on the popular “Golden Circle” route. Start at Þingvellir National Park, where you can walk in the rift valley between the North American and Eurasion tectonic plates! Here you can also learn about the establishment of the first parliament in the world.

Continue next to the two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall, the Geysir geothermal area with its spouting hot springs and the Kerið implosion crater. At Geysir, we recommend a visit to the multimedia show, where your family can virtually experience such wonders as being in an ice cave and seeing the northern lights. Before returning to Reykjavik, you can also visit the Slakki family petting zoo at Laugarás, where the kids can make friends with some friendly Icelandic farm animals (open during summer).

Driving distance approx. 206 km / 128 mi.

Highlights Highlights Highlights Highlights Optional Activity
  • Day 4: Parks & Geothermal Pools

Discover the fun family activities that Reykjavik has to offer today. Start with a visit to Laugardalur, where you can spend the early part of the day at the Reykjavik Family Park & Zoo. Here you will also find beautiful botanical gardens and one of the best pools in Reykjavik, Laugardalslaug, including a large outdoor pool, various hot tubs, a steam bath and a twisting water slide that is sure to be a hit with the kids.

A good idea for the afternoon is a stop for ice cream at the café inside Perlan (“The Pearl), which offers panoramic 360-degree views over the capital. The surrounding area at Perlan offers also easy hiking trails in Öskjuhlíð forest where it is ideal to explore with the family.

    Highlights
  • Day 5: Volcanic Wonderland & Blue Lagoon

Drive through the volcanic wonderland of Reykjanes Peninsula to the Blue Lagoon. Surrounded by unearthly lava formations, this geothermal lagoon and spa is famous for the radiant milky blue color of its warm mineral waters. Here you can also take advantage of the steam baths, saunas and on-site café. On your way back to Reykjavik, you have the option of taking the longer route around the peninsula to see the sights, such as lighthouses, bird cliffs, the hot springs at Seltún, the “Giantess in the Cave” in Keflavik and the Power Plant Earth exhibition (open in summer).

Driving distance approx. 153 km / 95 mi.

    Highlights Highlights Highlights
  • Day 6: Free Day to Explore Reykjavik

Today there are several activities for your family to enjoy. We recommend a visit to the Árbær open-air museum, which has over twenty buildings that replicate an old town square, a village and a traditional Icelandic farm. Another good option in the city is a short ferry ride to Viðey Island. You also have plenty of time for activities like horseback riding, fishing, swimming or enjoying the Nauthólsvík thermal beach, where hot water is pumped into the cove for a more pleasant swim.

If you prefer to see more of the countryside, drive down to the south coast and visit the Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss waterfalls and the folk museum at Skógar. A trip to Reynisfjara beach and the Dyrhólaey rock formation near Vík is also highly recommended.

    Highlights Optional Activity
  • Day 7: Home Sweet Home

Today it‘s time to head back home. Your private driver will pick your family up at your accommodation and take you to Keflavík Airport in time for your departure check-in.

We don’t like to brag, so we’ll let our happy customers do it for us.

Iceland - best family vacation ever!

After many years of cruising the globe, my husband and I and our two teenage boys, decided we needed to explore a new country in greater depth. My husband found Nordic Visitor and worked with Sigfus over a few months to plan the perfect summer family vacation. Everyone was happy - I saw museums in Reykjavik, we all hiked waterfalls and glaciers, and to top it off, there was a bird-watching adventure that led to puffin sighting. Every night we anticipated with excitement the fabulous hotel that Sigfus had selected and were never disappointed. We will be recommending Nordic Visitor to all our friends and look forward to working with them again in the future.

Iceland Wonderland

My grown daughters and I set up a 12 day South Island Tour with Kristin of Nordic Visitor. She was very accommodating. We added a couple of days and requested specific hotels. The trip was very successful. Our expectations were more than met. Kristin worked with us continuously during the planning and execution phases. She answered emails immediately. Her knowledge about places to see during our journey was amazing, even where to find remote Hot Pots. She and her staff helped make our trip very enjoyable.

Did not want to leave

It was a fantastic holiday. We all enjoyed it and did not want to leave.
