  • Day 1:  Welcome to Iceland

On arrival to Keflavik Airport, you will be greeted by a driver who will take you to your accommodation in Reykjavík. After settling in, the rest of the day is free for you to explore the vibrant city centre with its abundance of museums, restaurants and bars to suit all tastes.

If you're interested in checking out Icelandic design or experiencing the city's thriving coffee culture, head to the main street, Laugavegur, and enjoy its various shops and cosy cafes.

    Spend the night in Reykjavik.

    Highlights Optional Activity
  • Day 2:  The Golden Circle

Collect your rental car in the morning and begin your adventure by driving around the Golden Circle route, home to some of Iceland’s most popular attractions. Start with a visit to the fascinating Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, you can walk on a path in the rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Next on the route is the Haukadalur geothermal area, where you can see Geysir—the original “geyser”—and its more active neighbour, Strokkur, which spouts water every few minutes. End the circle with visits to the majestic Gullfoss waterfall and the old implosion crater of Kerið.

Spend the night in South Iceland.

Driving distance approx. 184 km / 114 mi.

    Highlights Highlights Highlights Optional Activity
  • Day 3:  Hot Springs in the Highlands

Travel on the Kjölur road—once notorious as a refuge for outlaws—between the Langjökull and Hofsjökull glaciers to Hveravellir, a high-temperature geothermal area with smoking fumaroles and sky-blue boiling pools. There you can find stunning landscapes off the beaten track, as well as natural hot pools popular with bathers.

Then continue on the Ring Road towards Akureyri, the “Capital of North Iceland”. On your way you will pass Skagafjörður, known as “The Mecca of the Icelandic Horse”, an ideal place to try riding the local breed.

Spend the night in the Akureyri area.

Driving distance approx. 292 km / 181 mi.

    Highlights Highlights Optional Activity
  • Day 4:  Raging Waterfalls & Grand Canyons

Start the day by visiting the Goðafoss waterfall on the way to the whale watching village of Húsavík. Then experience the amazing natural phenomena at Jökulsárgljúfur National Park, including the breathtaking Ásbyrgi canyon and the most powerful waterfall in Europe, Dettifoss.

Afterwards, head to the Lake Mývatn area and take in the moonlike surroundings, such as the boiling mud-pots at Námafjall, the pseudo craters at Skútustaðir, the lava maze Dimmuborgir and the Krafla Volcano. An ideal end to this day is a dip in the soothing geothermal waters of the Mývatn Nature Baths.

Spend the night in the Lake Mývatn area.

Driving distance approx. 258 km / 160 mi.

Highlights Highlights Highlights Highlights Highlights Highlights Highlights Highlights Highlights Highlights Optional Activity
  • Day 5:  The Lunar Landscapes of Askja Caldera

Follow the mountain road along the Jökulsá á Fjöllum glacial river to Mount Herðubreið, “The Queen of the Wilderness”. On the way, don’t miss Herðubreiðarlindir, an oasis on the edge of the Ódáðahraun lava field. The huge caldera of Askja, home of Lake Öskjuvatn, is also just a short drive away, and there you can find the explosion crater of Víti, which is partly filled with hot water that you can bath in.

Spend the night in the Egilsstaðir/Seyðisfjörður area.

Driving distance approx. 315 km / 196 mi.

    Highlights Highlights Highlights Highlights
  • Day 6:  Tranquil Fjords & Vatnajökull Glacier

Navigate the zigzagging curves along the magnificent East Fjords towards Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe. Each fjord is unique, and you will find many small fishing villages with friendly people and picturesque sights such as Mt. Búlandstindur and the monster-habitat Lagarfljót River.

Spend the night in the Vatnajökull area.

Driving distance approx. 186 km / 116 mi.

    Highlights Optional Activity
  • Day 7:  Floating Icebergs & Scenic Hikes

Head to the picture-perfect Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where you have the unique opportunity to take a boat tour between the floating icebergs. Spend the rest of the day exploring the wonders of Skaftafell, part of the immense Vatnajökull National Park.

There are also many interesting hiking trails here, including one that leads from the campsite near the Skaftafell Visitor Centre to the Svartifoss waterfall, which tumbles over a cliff of basalt columns shaped like organ pipes (4 km round-trip ).

Spend the night in the Skaftafell/ Kirkjubæjarklaustur area.

Driving distance approx. 200 km / 124 mi.

    Highlights Highlights Highlights Optional Activity
  • Day 8: The Remote and Scenic Landmannalaugar

Today it’s time to put your 4x4 vehicle to the test by exploring the southern highlands. Drive toward Landmannalaugar, a breathtaking region of Iceland with vast, sweeping landscapes and colourful rhyolite peaks. Reach Landmannalaugar by taking the Fjallabak mountain road, stopping by the Eldgjá fissures and Ófærufoss waterfall along the way. This region is quite remote compared to many parts of Iceland and the quiet, scenery and solitude is as relaxing as it gets. You can even enjoy a soak in a natural thermal pool there!

Spend the night in the Hrauneyjar/Hekla area.

Driving distance approx. 164 km / 101 mi.

Highlights Highlights Highlights Highlights Highlights Highlights Highlights Highlights Optional Activity
  • Day 9: Vast Lava Fields & Volcanic Reykjanes

Continue your journey to the volcanic wonderland of the Reykjanes Peninsula. Make an optional, unincluded visit to the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, which is set amidst a hauntingly beautiful black lava field. The waters are rich in silica and blue-green algae, giving the lagoon its reputed healing powers and characteristic bright blue colour. In-water massages are available (you must book in advance) but you can also unwind in the saunas and steam baths or get a natural massage under the mini waterfall. A trip to the Blue Lagoon is a wonderful way to spend a couple of relaxing hours, soaking in the healing waters and revitalising your skin.

If you wish to head directly to Reykjavik without visiting the Reykjanes peninsula, you can drive along the south coast back to the capital city. Worthwhile stops along the way include the surroundings of the quaint village Hveragerði, known for its glorious greenhouses and hot springs. Once back in Reykjavik, you have the option of doing some last-minute shopping or simply spending the night at your leisure.

    Spend the night in Reykjavik.

    Driving distance approx. 260km / 162 mi.

*Reservations are required for the Blue Lagoon. Contact your travel consultant for details.

  • Day 10:  Departure from Iceland

Transfer to Keflavík Airport by shuttle bus in time for your departure flight.

    Important notice:
It is a unique experience to visit Iceland’s remote highland areas that are accessible only with a 4x4 rental vehicle. However, it does require a skilled driver with knowledge about how to cross un-bridged rivers and drive on very rough roads.

Please keep in mind that conditions in the highlands can change quickly due to rain and snow, and it is possible that roads may be closed and rivers can become too big to cross. Therefore, all travellers MUST check road conditions before each leg of the journey and assess whether the route is passable. Please note that rental car insurance does NOT cover water damage to vehicles, so when crossing rivers you need to be sure how to cross it or wait for the next car to assist you over the water.

Nordic Visitor 4x4 Highland Adventure

Travelled via the planning services of Nordic Visitor 15Jul23-15Aug05. The experience was so overwhelmingly positive, I simply HAVE to offer a review.

The booking process was easy and our representative (Sigfus) was helpful and professional. We received our literature early enough to research and plan our trip. The itinerary was well thought out and helped us ensure we weren't missing anything. An pleasant add on were som hand written notes on the map with some "extras" such as good places for ice cream and off the track sights.

Accommodations were excellent and in the right places to enjoy the places we stayed. I could go on much further but will simply state that this company is top notch, we would highly recommend their services, and thanks to them, our Iceland experience was a trip of a lifetime.

Excellent customer service

Accomodation was excellent, friendly and in good locations. This was a great vacation. The service from Nordic Visitor excellent. The emergency updates regarding potential disruption due to volcanic activity were very much appreciated and demonstrated excellent customer service.
