  • Day 1: Welcome to Iceland

On arrival at Keflavik airport, collect your rental car and drive to your accommodation at Selfoss, a small town on the scenic south coast of Iceland. Enjoy your journey through the moon-like lava fields of the Reykjanes Peninsula, where you’ll also find the popular Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. After a long day of airports and flying, there’s nothing better than refreshing in the warm mineral waters of the lagoon, with spectacular lava formations all around you and a mud mask on your face in the fresh air.

Spend the next four nights in Selfoss.

Note: Your travel consultant can tailor your itinerary to your flight schedule. If you arrive on a later flight, you can drive directly to Selfoss and move the Blue Lagoon visit to your departure day.

Driving distance approx. 135 km / 84 mi.

  • Day 2: Hot Springs & Golden Falls

Today you‘ll get to experience some of Iceland‘s most popular natural attractions on a journey around the Golden Circle route. Start by stopping at the beautiful Þingvellir National Park, located on the North Atlantic Rift that splits the island between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Spend some time walking around this UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is also where Iceland’s Parliament first convened in 930 AD.

Then head to the geothermal area of Haukadalur. Here you’ll find a variety of bubbling mud pots, boiling pools and Geysir—the original geyser—along with its more active counterpart, Strokkur, which spouts scalding water several meters into the air every 8 minutes or so. At your next stop, the majestic Gullfoss (“Golden Falls”) waterfall, you can walk down a pathway to overlook the powerful, misty glacial cascade that plunges into a 70-metre deep canyon. So many great photo opportunities!

Driving distance approx. 191 km / 119 mi.

  • Day 3: Waterfalls, Beaches & New Year’s Eve

On this last day of the year, make it a memorable one at South Iceland’s picture-perfect sights. Visit the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you can walk behind the tumbling water, and another gorgeous waterfall, the 60-metre high Skógafoss. Near the village of Vík, we recommend checking out the black sand beach and fantastic views of the Dyrhólaey and Reynisdrangar rock formations. For an even more unforgettable day, join some optional activities in the area such as a guided glacier hike, snowmobile safari or quad biking tour.

Back in Selfoss you will enjoy a festive dinner at one of the local restaurants. Afterwards, we recommend attending one of the local town bonfires, where you can meet the locals along with fellow travellers and enjoy the Icelandic holiday tradition of fireworks at midnight. You might be surprised at just how many fireworks are set off in a town of 6,500 people! If you feel up to it, you can then continue the party at one of the town’s clubs with music and dancing late into the night.

Driving distance approx. 258 km / 160 mi.

  • Day 4: New Year Relaxation & Northern Lights

Take it easy today and enjoy the pristine nature and tranquillity around Selfoss. There are several hiking trails and charming highlights in the area worth a visit such as Hveragerði, a small village with many fascinating geothermal features. Or take a drive to the charming little seaside village of Eyrarbakki, where you’ll find many well-preserved houses from 1890-1920 and a stunning black beach.

If the skies are clear of clouds, an ideal ending to the day—and start to the New Year—is an evening stroll around town to see if the northern lights are dancing overhead!*

*Please note that the northern lights are a natural phenomenon, so sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Driving distance approx. 55 km / 34 mi.

    Optional Activity
  • Day 5:  Reykjavik & Departure

After this relaxing time on the South Coast it’s time to head home today. For your return drive to Keflavik Airport you can either follow the southern edge of Reykjanes Peninsula and visit more volcanic landscapes or go through Reykjavik to spend some time enjoying the museums, cafes and other cultural attractions. If you opt to explore the capital city, we recommend walking along the pond by city hall, checking out the small boutiques and restaurants at Reykjavik old harbour or visiting Perlan (“The Pearl”) for fantastic views over the city.

Driving distance approx. 135 km / 84 mi.

Reviews

We don’t like to brag, so we’ll let our happy customers do it for us.

Very Helpful

I booked my trip to Iceland with this company. They were extremely pleasant to work with. Lars was my main guy, and he was very helpful throughout my trip, from preplanning to bumps along the way. One unique feature here that I did not have in all my world travels is the company gives you a local cell phone to use during your trip! This really came in handy when winter weather delayed a transfer out of the capitol, and Lars rebooked me at the Hotel Fron.

Really nice professional people!

Nordic Awesome

My father and I used Nordic Visitor to book our February father/daughter trip to Iceland. These guys were great! They let us customize our own package, allowed to to make scheduling changes at the last minute and were concerned with customer service every step of the way.

Larus helped us with our rather complicated arrangements just three weeks before we left and I was nervous. However, all was well as they allowed us to take a package and shave off part of the guided tours and rent a car to drive further south, instead. They booked for us nice hotel rooms along the way and for the most part were reachable whenever we needed them

Out trip to Iceland was great and I have Nordic Visitor to thank for the hassle-free vacation.
