In January 1995 the village of Súðavík experienced an intense snowstorm that lasted several days. In the middle of it, an avalanche hit the town but, due to the adverse weather conditions, rescue work was extremely difficult and dangerous.

22 houses were destroyed and 14 people lost their lives. The town has since moved to another location, deeper in the fjord and now has a population of around 200, a fifth less than in 1995
