  • Day 2: The South Coast - Waterfalls and Black Sand Beaches

Today you will collect your rental car and head to the striking south coast of Iceland. Make way to the picturesque Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which is 40-metres high and its main attraction, besides the scenery, is the pathway leading behind the waterfall, giving visitors a chance to view the falls from within. Next up is a visit to the equally impressive Skógafoss waterfall before continuing to Reynisfjara*, a hauntingly beautiful black sand beach.

*Caution should always be exercised when visiting Reynisfjara beach near Vík due to powerful rogue/sneaker waves and the strong undertow current. Always stay far back from the water’s edge and read the warning sign before walking on the beach.

Spend the night in Kirkjubæjarklaustur area.

Driving distance approx. 261 km / 162 mi.

Then head to the famous Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and enjoy the view of floating icebergs. Next to the glacier lagoon, stop at the Diamond Beach where you will see big chunks of ice that have washed up on shore after being polished in the surf of the glacier lagoon. Continue to the smaller lagoon, Fjallsárlón. Then enjoy the scenic drive to the village of Vík, where you will spend the evening.

*venturing onto a glacier or engaging in ice climbing should only ever be attempted with the assistance of a licensed and experienced guide.

Next is the Haukadalur geothermal area, home of Geysir—the original “geyser”—and the more active Strokkur, which spouts water every few minutes. End the circle at Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can walk on a path in the rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.  Continue to Reykjavík for the evening.

Tour Information

We recommend that all our travellers read through the following information about driving during the winter in Iceland, what the tour includes, the itinerary, weather conditions during the winter season and other useful information for your travel. Also note that this is an active, fast-paced tour that is only available during specific months.

ABOUT OUR SELF-DRIVE TOURS
This is a self-drive tour where our guests follow a detailed personalised itinerary during their road trip in Iceland, no dedicated driver or tour guide on behalf of Nordic Visitor is included. All accommodations, the rental car, airport transfers and planned activities will be pre-booked by Nordic Visitor (as specified in the itinerary). Nordic Visitor works with a small group of trusted operators that the company has strong professional relationships with.

ACCOMMODATION AND ROOM TYPES
Our team of local travel experts at Nordic Visitor have put together a list of wonderful hotels for your stay in Iceland. We carefully select hotels/guesthouses in Reykjavik and the countryside based on excellent ratings, personal experience and comfort. Single, double and triple rooms are available for our self-drive packages. Please note, that in Iceland our room types are based on European standard sizes. For instance, a double bed often consists of two single beds pushed together. Triple rooms include a double bed along with an extra bed, a rollaway or a sofa bed, and a single room is often smaller than the standard double.

DRIVING DURING WINTER SEASON
While Iceland is a year-round destination, self-driving during the winter months is not for everyone. Nordic Visitor does not recommend a long road trip in the winter if you have never driven on snow and ice.  If you are going to embark on a winter self-drive in Iceland, you should be comfortable driving in what can be challenging conditions, including snowstorms, icy roads and little daylight. Please be advised that Iceland is known for narrow roads and a 4WD is recommended for the winter.

For inexperienced winter drivers, we recommend one of our guided small group winter tours where you will have a local, experienced guide at the wheel.

SAFETY, DAYLIGHT HOURS & WEATHER CONDITIONS
Please note that sightseeing is dependent on weather and road conditions and might need to be altered if conditions are not favourable.  Please be advised that daylight is limited in Iceland during the winter months, with about 4-5 hours of daylight during the holiday season, from December to January. Winter in Iceland is considered to be from October to April. For more information on weather conditions and daylight hours, we recommend visiting Nordic Visitor’s Online Travel Guide.
