A must-see spot in the Icelandic highlands
Kerlingarfjöll is a mountain range in the central highlands of Iceland. This is a remote and untouched region that is famous for being a hiker’s paradise and ideal if you enjoy the great outdoors.
In summer you’ll find colourful ridges and steaming hot springs. During the rest of the year, expect a winter wonderland as snow-capped mountains and glaciers tower above you. The roads here are famously open for a few weeks in summer and only passable by 4x4 vehicle in winter.
What makes it so colourful? The range is made up of a rust-coloured rhyolite rock which gives the region this distinctive shade. Kerlingarfjöll emerged 10,000 years ago thanks to volcanic eruptions.
Throughout its history, the mountain range has inspired many myths and folktales. Even the name (translating to “old lady mountain”) suggests that a female troll was caught by the sunlight and turned to stone. This rock formation, “Kerling”, can be found along one of the hiking trails.
The mountain range includes peaks like Mt Kerlingarfjöll, the glaciers Langjökull and Hofsjökull, as well as the geothermal area of Hveradalir. The area is protected as a nature reserve by the Icelandic government.
Where can you stay in this area? The Highland Base is located in the Ásgarður valley at the edge of Kerlingarfjöll, making it the top spot to stay during your adventure. It includes a variety of accommodation, from private lodges to camping spots, as well as geothermal pools and a restaurant.
