From farmstead to cultural centre
Skriðuklaustur is a farmstead in the valley of Fljótsdalur in Iceland. It was the home of author Gunnar Gunnarsson and in 1939 was built and designed by German architect Fritz Höger. The house today is a museum for Gunnarsson. One of the Visiting Centers for the Vatnajökull National Park is at Skriðuklaustur.
Since 1992, archaeological excavation of a nearby 16th century monastery have yielded exciting results. Visitors are allowed to view the ruins.
