Explore the Reykjanes peninsula´s unique history
The Garðskagi Folk Museum houses many important items from the history of Garður including maps, tools and fishing equipment, which were essential for life both at land and sea. A big part of the museum is centred around maritime artifacts, which were used for catching and processing fish. Visitors get a sense of what it was like to live in the region decades ago, and how fishing developed along the peninsula.
Also on Garðskagi, you can find two lighthouses. The older one, and also the smaller of the two, was once regarded as one of the best lighthouses in Iceland because it stood low-- therefore mist did not pose a problem. Although, there was the risk of the lighthouse being damaged because of the strong surf, and it was sometimes not visible because of storms at sea. The lighthouses are a popular destination to stop and take a photo.
