Hot spring plains of Hveravellir
Hveravellir or ‘hot spring plains’ is an unspoiled geothermal area to the north of Kjalhraun, and one of the best-known geothermal areas in Iceland. Located between two glaciers, Langjökull and Hofsjökull, the hot springs, pools, glaciers and magnificent views draw tourists from all over, though it is only accessible in a 4x4 vehicle.
Kjalvegur is usually open to 4x4 traffic from the middle of June until September or October, depending on the weather. The hot spring area has been protected since 1965 and visitors are asked to stay on the boardwalks when exploring. The thermal activity can also be seen in the lava field where there are steaming chasms.
