TAKE IN THE HEIGHT AND POWER OF THIS LAVA PLATEAU

Hellisheiði is a lava plateau located just outside Reykjavík, the capital city. You’re likely to drive through it if you take Iceland’s main route, the Ring Road.

Sitting at 380 metres (1,247 feet) high, the mountain pass is impressive visually as well as geologically. Here you’ll be able to see lava fields and mountains, such as Mount Hengill. On a clear day, look out for views of the famous Eyjafjallajökull volcano and Westman Islands.

Hellisheiði is also the home of one of the largest geothermal power stations in the world. Thanks to its high geothermal activity, this helps provide hot water and energy for south and west Iceland, including the capital city region.
